Rehabilitating Irrigation Systems and Supporting Livelihoods in Baghlan

ANOCED is proud to announce the successful completion of its Cash for Work (CFW) Project in Baghlan Markazi District, funded by UNDP. This initiative addressed the dual challenges of post-flood infrastructure restoration and providing economic relief to vulnerable families.

Project Achievements

  1. Canal Cleaning and Debris Removal

    • The project rehabilitated 6 kilometers of irrigation canals, exceeding the initial target of 5 kilometers.
    • A total of 7,200 cubic meters of debris was removed, restoring irrigation to 4,000 acres of farmland in the villages of Gerdab, Taherian, and Arab.
  2. Employment Generation

    • Provided temporary employment to 220 local workers, including 200 unskilled and 20 skilled laborers.
    • Workers earned wages over a 15-day period, offering critical financial support to their families.
  3. Community Impact

    • Directly benefited 550 households by ensuring consistent water supply for agricultural activities.
    • Promoted community ownership through regular engagement with local leaders and stakeholders.

Environmental and Social Safeguards

  • Environmental Protection: The project restored agricultural productivity while preventing further degradation caused by blocked waterways.
  • Social Safeguards: A Grievance Redress Mechanism (GRM) was established to address community concerns, ensuring inclusivity and transparency in implementation.

Challenges and Lessons Learned

  • Adapting to Weather: Adjusting work hours during extreme heat improved safety compliance.
  • Clear Communication: Setting expectations about equipment ownership minimized confusion.
  • Community Needs: Engaging stakeholders highlighted the need for broader infrastructure support beyond the project scope.

Conclusion

The CFW project demonstrated ANOCED's commitment to combining short-term relief with long-term impact. By addressing immediate employment needs and restoring critical irrigation systems, the initiative strengthened community resilience and laid the groundwork for sustainable agricultural recovery in Baghlan Province.
